I am hoping that if Cap & Tax passes the Senate (and even if it doesn't) that this naked power grab by the government spurs the imaginations of would-be inventors everywhere. Whether you have confidence in the underlying science of AGW or not (I do not), it seems that for the foreseeable future any large, static, heavily capitalized and centralized sources of power generation (or any business that can be described as such) will be a target for the looters in Washington. On top of this, we desperately need to start re-thinking our distribution networks.
How about home-centered power generation, something beyond the inefficient solar collection technology of today, or roof top windmills - the next big leap in power technology. You scatter the generation sources across millions of locations and it (hopefully) becomes too disperse for the government to grab. And now your energy source is at the point of consumption. This is not a novel idea, but now it seems to have greater political implications than before Cap & Tax.
Let's make Cap & Tax spawn something useful, something other than another boondoggle for the looters: Spur hundreds if not thousands of hobbyists and tinkerers to look a little harder if they are already engaged, or just plain get started (I think someone wrote a book about this).
